About Us
Del Norte County Democratic Party is an active organization focused on party building and educating voters about the issues important to Democrats. Del Norte County is the last county on the coast of Northern California; home of Yurok, Resighini, Elk Valley, and Tolowa Tribes, Nations, and Rancherias. We are privileged to live in a beautiful environment where the redwoods meet the ocean and blessed with rivers that we actively protect. The Democratic Party currently consists of a diverse group of individuals that represent most aspects of our community. Our membership includes a county supervisor, a former elected supervisor, a former county assessor, a county engineer (who was elected as the acting president of the new CAEA -SEIU Labor Union), a county probation officer, the chair of the Crescent City planning commission as well as attorneys, and a Smithsonian recipient of the "America's Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences”. We encourage young people to join our committee as student associates. We are proud to call ourselves Democrats and make ourselves visible at every opportunity. We lead by example and continue to work to elect Democrats with vision to create a better world. | Welcome to the Del Norte County Democratic Party Website! It is maintained by volunteers who believe that responsible empowerment comes through information. In this day and age, the Internet gives us the ability to stream information and ideas in an easily accessible fashion. Our desire is not only to present news items but provide a forum for Democrats to interact and get engaged with the Democratic Party and our community as a whole. It is also a vehicle for our elected representatives to give their constituents updates on legislation and activity in their districts. Thank you for visiting our site. Suggestions are welcomed and contributions are encouraged. The Democratic Party believes in honest transparency. To this end, you will note that the website includes the agendas and minutes of meetings of the Del Norte Democratic Central Committee and links to other sites. It is important that people seek information from as many sources as possible before they reach their own conclusions on the issues of the day. As our Party grows, so will our website, so we encourage you to visit the site frequently. Tuesday 02 September 2008 Del Norte Dems Honor Labor
The Del Norte County Democratic Party hosted the 5th Annual Labor Day BBQ in Beachfront Park. There were an estimated 125 lunches that were distributed to the attendees. Mayor Irene Tynes and Supervisor Martha McClure welcomed the crowd and opened the speakers program. The President of the Humboldt – Del Norte Counties Building & Construction Trades Council, Mr. Sid Berg, was among the dozen guest speakers. There was representation from the California Teachers Association, Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 290, CA. Schools Employee Association, Ca. State Employees Association, and City Council candidates Rich Enea and Kathryn Murray. Measure A was discussed by Superintendent of Del Norte Schools, Jan Moorehouse and School Board Candidates Faith Crist and Francis Costello were among the speakers. James Ramsey addressed the Harbor issues as a candidate for Harbor Commission. Mr. Clark Moore, long time incumbent of the Health District ended the program of local candidates. Obama supporter Annie Drager ended the day with a speech for Senator Obama. Friday 29 August 2008 Del Norte Dems Join Millions
Democratic Presidential Nominee, Barack Obama's, acceptance speech was viewed by 40 million people Thursday night. It was the most watched political convention event in history. More people watched Obama accept the nomination than viewed the opening ceremonies of the Olympics or the American Idol final. Bush's acceptance speech drew 27.6 viewers. Through the four days of the convention, 22.5 million households tuned into the event, more than any in history. Besides being experienced by over 85,000 people live in Denver's Mile High Stadium, in private homes and at organized events across the country, Barack Obama had the attention of America. People listened and heard our plan for the future. At the Democratic Headquarters in Crescent City, a hearty crowd gathered to eat, drink and cheer during the festivities of convention nomination night. The optimism shared by the crowd was shown with great smiles and applause throughout the evening. Attendees listened carefully to every word and were not disappointed. McCain Picks "Hockey Mom" for Running Mate John McCain took the "experience" issue off the table with his selection of Sarah Palin to be his Vice Presidential running mate. Palin describes herself as a "Hockey Mom". Palin, Governor of Alaska, when asked July 31 what she thought about being considered for the V.P. slot, stated , "[A]s for that V.P. talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day?" If she doesn't know what the Vice President does, how can she possibly be qualified to be a "heartbeat away" from the Presidency? Democrats Wrap Convention with Unity The Democratic Party, in grand style, wrapped up our convention in Colorado with 84,000 people cheering Barack Obama accepting the nomination for President of the United States. For four wonderous days, America was treated to speeches by every notable Democrat in the country. The Democratic Party's agenda for the future was clearly defined by Obama in his acceptance speech and his choice of Joe Biden to be his running mate. Bill and Hillary Clinton each delivered unifying speeches at the convention that rocked the house. Michelle Obama demonstrated her brilliance with an address that moved America. The Democrats, with Barack Obama and Joe Biden, are ready to take on "Maverick" John McCain and his running mate, "Hockey Mom" Sarah Palin. Wednesday 27 August 2008 "Barack Obama is my candidate. And he must be our President." - Hillary Clinton Senator Hillary Clinton called for Americans to unite behind Barack Obama to return America to the people. She reflected on her own campaign while calling for her followers to support Obama. She said, "I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?" Friday 22 August 2008 Legislators' Scorecard
As we move closer to the November elections, it helps to know the voting records of our representatives in order to evaluate their performance. Capitol Weekly, an online site dedicated to California politics and government, prepares a "Scorecard" based on votes cast and other sources to rate and rank our legislators. As they freely admit, the "Scorecard" is subjective but it can provide voters with additional information necessary to cast an informed vote. Monday 18 August 2008 "Barack Obama Will Be a President That Will Not Choke on the Word Union" "Most working families today do not have homes that have anywhere near ten rooms. John McCain has ten houses. Many working people in America have to work two and three jobs to provide for their families and pay their car loans. John McCain hops on a private jet. Is it any wonder why McCain champions a George Bush agenda of cutting taxes for corporations and the wealthy, helping oil companies turn record profits, and leaving working families to fend for themselves? McCain's velvet world leaves him utterly unprepared to make the tough choices we need to restore the middle class and ensure that everyone in America has quality, affordable health insurance." - Andy Stern, President, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) . Veterans Benefits Proposition Added To Ballot Proposition 12 - Veterans Bond Act of 2008 This act provides for a bond issue of nine hundred million dollars ($900,000,000) to provide farm and home aid for California veterans. Fiscal impact: Costs of about $1.8 billion to pay off both the principal ($900 million) and interest ($856 million) on the bonds; costs paid by participating veterans. Average payment for principal and interest of about $59 million per year for 30 years. Ballot Title and SummaryVeterans' Bond Act of 2008 * This act provides for a bond issue of nine hundred million dollars ($900,000,000) to provide loans to California veterans to purchase farms and homes. * Appropriates money from the state General Fund to pay off the bonds, if loan payments from participating veterans are insufficient for that purpose. Summary of Legislative Analyst's Estimate of Net State and Local Governments Fiscal Impact: * Costs of about $1.8 billion to pay off both the principal ($900 million) and interest ($856 million) on the bonds; costs paid by participating veterans. * Average payment for principal and interest of about $59 million per year for 30 years. Thursday 14 August 2008 SEIU Protests Schwarznegger's Assualt The two million member Service Employees International Union (SEIU) protested Governor Schwarznegger's decision to reduce state employees' income to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 per hour until the State budget is passed. Using public employees as pawns in the game the Republicans are playing is having a direct impact on working class families and the communities they live in. SEIU members made their statement of protest at Pelican Bay Prison yesterday. Workers are having to take out personal loans just to make ends meet and, therefore, are less able to contribute to the local economy. Democrats and State Controller, John Chiang, are fighting the Republican Governor and legislators' assualt on service employees. The Republicans' desire to cut State services and borrow against future Lottery sales is their means to balance the budget. Wednesday 13 August 2008 DNCDCC Endorses Measure A for Schools At its monthly meeting, the Del Norte County Democratic Central Committee voted, unanimously, to endorse Measure A on the November Ballot. Del Norte County USD Argument in Favor of Measure A Our schools are the most important assets in our communities and should be our number one priority. From higher achieving students, to future job training, to greater safety, to improved property values, quality schools make a difference. Our teachers and staff do their best to educate our students, but many of our classrooms and school facilities are outdated and inadequate to provide students the education they need to succeed. While the District has done a good job of maintaining our neighborhood schools over the years, our facilities are old. The average age of our schools is over 45 years, and the number of major repairs, renovations, and upgrades needed at our sites has reached a critical point. Your YES vote on Measure A will provide funding to improve our local schools and bring our classrooms up to today’s safety, technological, and educational standards. Measure A will improve District classrooms and school facilities by: · Making health and safety improvements throughout the District · Upgrading electrical systems to improve student access to computers and modern technology · Repairing or replacing old and deteriorating plumbing and sewer systems and leaky roofs · Upgrading or replacing outdated heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems to improve energy efficiency · Constructing new classrooms to replace outdated, temporary classrooms As taxpayers, we agree on the importance of quality schools and financial safeguards. Measure A makes financial sense and protects taxpayers · By law, spending must be reviewed and annually audited by an independent citizens’ oversight committee · Funds can only be spent to improve schools, not for teacher or administrative salaries Measure A upgrades and renovates outdated classrooms, improves the education of local children, and maintains the quality of our communities – and that’s something we can all support. Please, VOTE YES ON MEASURE A! News Categories
